BRITISH OPEN - LOOK EXPLORATION
At the earliest moments of the project, the Perception team pursued several different visual concepts to see which ones resonated the strongest with ESPN. Once a design was picked, the alternate concepts (seen below) made their way to the Perception archives.

BRITISH OPEN - Final Concept
After discussing with the team at ESPN, we decided to focus on a concept we had created that conveyed the historic feeling of St. Andrews by depicting it as a watercolor painting.

BRITISH OPEN - Painting st. andrews
Rather than rely solely on photoshop trickery, we immediately decided the best way to capture the soul of St. Andrews was through a foundation of actual watercolor paintings. Extended Perception team member Steven Lasky went to work painting over a dozen landscapes of the St. Andrews course, many as whole compositions, others designed to be layered in animation. These paintings were the foundation for the project moving forward, serving not only as storyboards, but as textures for 3D and animation.

BRITISH OPEN - Shooting Talent & Elements
We quickly decided to begin the spot with our camera pushing from the real world, into the illustrated world of the canvas. In order to acheive this, we prepared a green screen shoot of an artist at an easle, using the very same artist who painted our imagery, Steven Lasky.

BRITISH OPEN - INK BLEEDS
Once the live action was captured, we spent the rest of the afternoon filming various ink-bleed effects to use as mattes in the final animation.

BRITISH OPEN - FINAL PRODUCT
In the end, we combined live action, watercolor paintings, paint effects and 3D geometry to create an animation moving through the very same paintings we held in our hands.
