hwm case study - intro
How can you create an epic and magical cinematic experience that pays homage to Hollywood and classic iconic films without showing scenes from any movies, or any famous characters? Perception was tasked with this mission to create an unforgettable guest experience, within 90 seconds, at the world famous Hollywood Wax Museum.
HWM Case study - PROCESS
The guiding principle was to reinvigorate that sense of wonder, that feeling one gets as a child going to the cinema and seeing something larger than life on a huge screen and remembering that forever. The key to this was to represent the major genres of cinema and also to pay homage to the movies themselves, but to do so without showing any of those actual films, characters, actors, or scenes.

Once the final pieces for the concept were in place, Perception created a compelling story to tie the whole piece together. The idea was to use the film genres as the structure for the piece with specific scenes based on individual genres - comedy, action, musical, war, etc. - and to use seamless transitions to take the viewer on the journey from beginning to end.

HWM Case study - PRODUCTION
Perception went west-coast to film the live action. Leveraging the power of the Red MX camera, Perception shot at a giant greenscreen stage in Downtown LA with three cameras to get all of the elements and footage that would be needed. Seven different genres of cinema were filmed over 2 days. Several days in advance of the shoot all of the fight scenes and dance numbers were choreographed and run through repeatedly. Perception was lucky to work with such amazing talent: Actors, Cinematographer, Costume Designer, Stunt Coordinator, Stunt Performers, Dancers, Prop Armorer and a topknotch and talented crew. With all the hard work some amazing footage was captured and the whole thing was pulled off. After two intense days of shooting in LA, Perception headed back to NYC for post.

HWM Case study - GENRES & BREAKDOWNS
Live action elements in hand, it was time for the magic, creating an enthralling narrative packed with visual effects and beautiful imagery. The majority of the backgrounds were created in CG, extracted and then the mattes were painted and projected back on the 3D models. The live action footage was match-moved and keyed. All the ingredients ready, the giant jigsaw puzzle was carefully composited together.

What was originally meant to be a minute and a half long montage became a 3 minute long chronicle worthy of the films and filmmakers that it honors. In the end Perception created a captivating piece that invokes the majesty and excitement that is Cinema.
